El Nino expected to last through the winter;  bodes well for a big winter in Big Bear and return of lake levels

Lets hope this story I read in USA Today holds true.  It calls for a heavy winter and an end to our drought!

There’s a 90% chance El Niño will last through the fall and an 85% chance it will hang around through next winter, a prediction that boosts hope for much-needed rain and snow in California’s drought.

Ahh Shucks!  Potential inclement weather forces Amgen Tour Time Trial relocation.

Due to the forecast of snow and low temperatures, the Amgen Tour of California organizers have determined that race day conditions will not be safe for riders, teams, partners, fans or staff participating or attending the Individual Time Trial events scheduled for Friday, May 15, at Big Bear Lake.

To preserve the important Time Trial stage of the 2015 Amgen Tour of California, arrangements are being formalized to relocate Friday’s Men’s and Women’s Individual Time Trials to the Santa Clarita vicinity.

Amgen Tour of California executive director Kristin Klein said, “While we are very disappointed to have to relocate the Individual Time Trials from Big Bear Lake, the safety of all of those affected has always been our primary concern.”

“We are extremely appreciative of everything the Big Bear Lake Organizing Committee has done for us this past year and in years past. While it is truly unfortunate that the community of Big Bear Lake will not fully capitalize on the impact as expected, our decision had to be based on the safety of the riders, the teams, the fans and residents,” commented Klein. “We owe everyone in Big Bear Lake a debt of gratitude and look forward to the opportunity to return to Big Bear Lake in the coming years.”

Craig Smith, of the Local Organizing Committee, said it was a difficult decision, and the local organizers and the Tour of California organizers had kept in constant contact regarding the weather. Big Bear officials worked hard to explain the spring snows and that they typically are minimal and melt quickly. But when the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory and called for 4 to 8 inches, the decision to relocate the time trails was made due to rider safety, Smith said.

Smith said the Local Organizing Committee is undestanding of the decision, and that everybody in the community was behind the Time Trials in Big Bear. Amgen Tour of California has promised to come back and discussions are already taking place on what can be done in Big Bear in the future.

The weather is the one thing we can’t control, Smith said.

“We thank the Tour’s executive and race director Kristin Klein and Jim Birrell, as well as their very professional team along with all of our funding and presenting partners, vendors, 200 plus staff and volunteers who understand tough decisions the Tour needs to make.,” said Ray Dicius, vice chair, Big Bear Lake 2015 Local Organizing Committee.

Specific details regarding the Santa Clarita course, road closures and other important information will be announced on Thursday, May 14, via press release and on-line at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com .

Friday’s schedule for Stage 6 Presented by Lexus in Santa Clarita will be 11 a.m.—Women’s Individual Time Trial Empowered with SRAM and 1 p.m.— Men’s Individual Time Trial.

Other remaining stages of the 2015 Amgen Tour of California:

Saturday, May 16 – Stage 7 Presented by Lexus: Ontario to Mt. Baldy

Sunday, May 17 – Stage 8 Presented by Amgen: L.A. LIVE to Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium

Stanfield Marsh Photo

Love this picture of Stanfield Marsh.  It captures a lot of what I like about Big Bear Lake.  The beauty, the tranquility, the colors, the feeling that you have escaped.  It really is hard to believe its less than two hours from downtown L.A.   Please visit the photographer’s website that took this amazing photo, John Fischer.  He really is a fantastic photographer.  His nature shots are particularly inspiring, but he photographs everything on his nomadic adventures throughout the United States.  www.noroadunturned.com
